Imagine a place somewhere between the woods and the sea, where there is enough space for the Wilderness and the Wildflowers, where there is room to feel the sun on your skin, the wind tousling your hair, the earth, the sun, and the rain embracing and inspiring you. A place where there’s enough space to wander, to pause, to reflect, and to wonder…
A Wildflower short is a slightly shorter Notes of a Wildflower than “usual”.
Because sometimes it’s just nice not to set the bar too high for myself, to give my sense of wonder some space, and to play a little trick on Miss Perfect 🤭
My bed is situated beneath the sloping roof of my house. In that sloped roof, there are four windows. If I want to, I can lie in bed and look up at the stars and the moon. Whenever possible, I open the windows. It's wonderful to sleep beneath an open window, to feel a gentle breeze now and then, and to hear the sounds from outside—rustling leaves, croaking frogs, and of course, the birds.
Around 4:30 a.m., the “dawn chorus” begins. The blackbird and the thrush are the first to sing; their songs are beautiful and varied, like listening to a classical concert. Soon after, the sparrows take over with their simpler repertoire. The pigeons also suddenly join in. It’s a delightful way to wake up.
And as it turns out, there’s even a word for this...
Seatherny
[seth-er-nee] noun
The peace and calm one feels while listening to birdsong.
Seatherny is a neologism—a newly coined term. It's made up of the English words SErenity and fEATHER. The “y” denotes “characterized by.”
While researching this term, I found this beautiful poem by Debbie Harris that expresses this feeling very well:
Seatherny’s Royal Symphony
Royal notes through dawn’s embrace,
Feathered sonnets fill the space,
Christ created this sweet refrain,
Beauty flows, a symphony unfolds.
Seatherny, nice word, nice feeling. Maybe I should take a moment to write a Haiku about Seatherny myself 😉
p.s. a tip I shared before is the app Merlin to recognise birds. Absolutely recommended!

That's beautiful! I love to learn about new words (as much as I enjoy learning old words that aren't really used any more). Languages are so interesting! Thank you for a lovely new word, Hilda! I enjoyed your Wildflower short. 🕊😊
Two of my favourite things - the dawn chorus and words! I love your Wildflower Shorts; they are little snippets of lovely things. ☺️
